Review: 3 Inches of Blood – Fire Up the Blades (2007)

mini.jpg

Ahhhhh, what I wouldn’t give for a healthy slab of some fresh 100% old school metal to listen to. Something that is old school, but will melt your face off every time you listen to it. What ever shall I listen to in order to quench my thirst for unbridled mayhem? Oh wait…3 Inches of Blood of course!

Yes world, we have been offered yet another taste of the beautiful behemoth known as 3 Inches of Blood. With the release of their third full length album this month, FIRE UP THE BLADES, we faithful followers of the Blood are given a chance to to not only lend credibility to ourselves by proving that Advance and Vanquish was no mere metal version of The Darkness, but rather a refreshing taste of metal that many musicians these days are too serious or too trendy to undertake. Fortunately, the lifeblood that is 3 Inches of Blood has found the means to write a new album, and what an album it is! We start the bloodletting with “Through the Horned Gate”, a great build up of superior metal chops, and end with “Rejoice in the Fires of Man’s Demise”, a full 13 songs at 51 minutes and some change, and every one of those 13 are ear blistering, fist pounding, neck wrecking shreds of bliss! Yes, there have been good albums thus far in 2007, but how many of those albums can you honestly say have been nearly flawless?

Usually when I write a review I try and be honest with myself and the readers to seek out the good and bad of the music I am listening to as any good journalist persues to do. Well, an album such as FIRE UP THE BLADES makes it quite difficult to do my job the way it should be done. Virtually picking up where they left off with Advance and Vanquish, 3 Inches of Blood have continued with their tried and true method of intertwining clean and harsh vocals on behalf of Cam Pipes and Jamie Cooper respectively, leaving yet another perfect blend of old school and new school . Brandishing the perfect vocal combination, with an arsenal of competent and well versed metal musicians that rejoice in not having to use rehashed At the Gates and Napalm Death riffs, the progenious approach to metal that 3 Inches of Blood undertakes has caught its share of criticism (of which this reviewer will never undertand). Opponents have hailed the boys as jokesters who relish in the traditional mentality of “true metal power”, the truth is this understanding of the band is far from the truth. Those who criticized Advance and Vanquish for being too over the top or laughed at it for supposedly making light of metal’s fantasy based themes and solidarity will be laughing last because 3 Inches of Blood has capitalized on this mentality even more, showing fans and critics alike that they are not going anywhere, and are quite serious about their sentiments.

For those looking for a well balanced look at FIRE UP THE BLADES, I am sorry I couldn’t fulfill your request at examining the negatives of this album, but for me, there were too few to mention. If you have been a previous fan of 3 Inches of Blood, to say you’ll enjoy this album would be a huge understatement. I have heard many albums in 2007, but so far, this one takes the top spot of the year so far. If you haven’t done so yet, do yourself a big favor and immediately purchase this album. Don’t take a test listen on Myspace, just leave your computer and get to buying, it will be well worth the trip.
